Kybella for Permanent Fat Reduction
KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin”. It is not approved for children less than 18 years of age. Studies are under way to explore the safety and effectiveness for using KYBELLA® to reduce fat in areas other than the submental chin area.
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat, and the effect is permanent.
The safety profile of KYBELLA® is well characterized. The most common side effects are temporary swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of firmness around the treatment area. KYBELLA® can less commonly cause other side effects, including temporary trouble swallowing and temporary nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.
The cost for a treatment session is usually between $450 and $600, depending on the size of the area being treated. It typically takes between 3 and 4 treatment sessions, spaced out about every three months between sessions, for optimal results. However, some patients with very little fat may obtain satisfactory results after one or two treatments.
